We're about to leave on a month-long trip through N. California, into western OR and WA then back south and are looking for info on some great hot springs along our route. Unfortunately we really don't know what our route is yet, but that's where your help may come in! So far we're starting at the High Sierra Music Fest in Quincy, CA, then visiting friends near Ashland on our way to Eugene and the Country Fair, then maybe Bend, more friends at Hood River, then things get more sketchy as we go north somewhere into WA for more hiking and rock climbing.
We know there's quite a few springs along our way. Any recommendations? We'll be driving in a small RV, so can't handle any rough roads.

I posted this in Hot Springs Eternal tribe but I think more people will see it and find it useful here.

I'm sure many people are aware of the problems at this hot spring but I thought I would share my story from this Saturday (3/29/08). A friend and I were at Terwilliger (recently the kiosk at the trailhead was burned down), and heard there was a cop with a dog in the parking lot. We figured it was because of the kiosk but it turns out they were there to examine the cars and search them if the dog smelled anything. We were warned about this on our walk down by someone who was searched but nothing was found.

As soon as I reached the parking lot the cops new my name what car was mine and were going to search it no matter what. I was able to get them not to search it by giving away a tin with herb and my pipe. I ended up getting a $525 dollar ticket and they let me go on my way. And they were still waiting for one car that had a "hit" by the dog. All in all it was a lot better than what could have happened if they searched the car. They told me that it is common practice to bring a drug dog to that parking lot and smell the cars. The cops also said they don't care about small amounts (less than pound) and that is why I only got a ticket. If this is true then I question there reasoning for coming to that parking lot because they would only catch users there.

I wanted to warn all out there to be careful at this particular hot spring. I'm sure many people know about the vandelism probablems but federal police targeting herb users is new to me. I would never leave anything in the car because they never even tried to search my person. Good luck to all that visit this spring because I don't think I'll be returning for a long time.

my ass...

my daughter and i Live in marin county and i direct a state licensed child care called Daydream.
i have many talents and gifts that i share within community.
i am a single mother and have been for twelve years without support.
i have been paying 2200 a month in rent plus bills yet when the storm came we had no heat or a way to cook for days.
i feel very tired of consuming so much to end up broke so i put in my 30 day notice on this home on january 1 meaning my daughter and i need to find a more efficient way to Live happily and in service by the 1st of february.
as well, i have been actively healing from recently realized child sexual abuse so i feel more vulnerable and more tired than ever.

i sent an email out to many friends for suggestions and 3 of them wrote back asking if i had considered harbin as a place to reside and work and heal.
i have never been to harbin hotsprings but felt it incredible that the Wind spoke to me thrice about it as an option so i heeded and called them up.

the "seraphim type", higher than thou, treatment that i received from the people in position there in the last couple of weeks has been startling and dramatic.
my genuine curiosity and Hope was met by hypocritical hierarchy.
they discriminated against me before i even got there for having a daughter and for needing healing.

i have come to Be greatly disturbed by their false projections of "Heart consciousness".

www.harbin.org/hccnacob.htm

i asked to come visit the land and shake a couple of hands for a few hours in the name of whether or not we would find that we did, indeed, want to apply for residency there.
nope, not permitted to do so without paying full price for both me and my 11 year old daughter.
just to walk onto the land!?
nope.
that is insane and unjust!
i told them that i did not have the money to eat much right now and that paying for gas was a stretch but they did not care.
i did not want to soak or stay overnight.
just a tour, please, on the sacred green damp Earth (that they do not and have not ever truly owned) and an interview.
i was told "we are not a charitable organization" despite their NONprofit, "Heart consciousness", status.
they have no scholarships for people in my position who could really use a dose of minerals and spring water but are funded to reach out and see the Oneness in All Beings. THEY ARE A CHURCH!!! what a selfish crock...

it seems to me, very clearly as i drew the owl card in reference to this, that the wind blew the name of harbin to me so that i could blaze through their DECEPTIVE facade.
now, i am called to write about it and spread the word because of how discouraging and appalling it was for me.
i called them in a time of much Hope and vulnerability and they discouraged me over and over again.
they invalidated my need and disregarded my plight.
"we don't have any therapists here", "it is difficult to get accepted with a child", "we have a VERY selective process", etc.
not once did any of them say, "welcome to you and your daughter. come. see what we are about and let's go from there."
they said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of the sort.

i am glad to hear that they are are "tight" financially. it may have something to do with their attitudes and Self righteous behaviors toward others whom they perceive as lesser than them.

it hurt feeling their discrimination and blatant disregard when i called with so much innocent excitement (my daughter and i both).

this posting is meant to challenge their structure with a fierce example of how they truly are, underneath it all, and when it comes down to it.

i see clearly and i will not be supporting that "community" on any level.
in fact, i will be spreading the word about my icky experience from here forth.

i realize how much passivity exists in most of the people who go there especially if they do not concern themselves with such things as poverty or struggle. i realize that these words will not stop the "regulars" from going for their monthly soak. i see how many people are so willing to just turn their heads and pretend like they do not even see anything unjust in this area if it does not serve them in the long run.
so Be it.
it matters not to the Universal scheme of things.
what goes around comes around.
period.

Peace.

I'll probably take a rental car and chains, unless you have a four wheel drive vehicleand want someone to share gas and/or driving that. I'd count on needing snow chains or good mud-and-snow tires. expect snow over the passes. we share cost of rental and fuel...I don't mind driving (as long as I can pick the radio station or tunes,(mostl yacoustic, noncommercial, old-school)...we' re pretty mellow and easygoing, vegetarian, don't smoke, prefer friendly conversation with some quiet breaks -she's a serious reader who will probably be buried in a book formuch of the trip, whcih is about four hours in good weather and traffic.

it's about half an hour or 45 minutes from Sierra to the ski and rec areas around Truckee, such as Sugar Bowl. or you can just hang out around SHS. baths are open 24 hours to guests...

I'd be traveling with my 13 year old daughter. I need to check her rehearsal schedule she's involved in a community theater project in Berkeley, and definitely to leave Sierraville no laterthan Friday morning...I have all day classes on Saturday.

I'm familiar with most of the Oregon hot springs but about California I'm clueless. I have one extra day to play with and my current plan is to drive on the east side of the Sierras and stop at Travertine hot springs. They sound nice and the access is easy. However, since it's so easy to learn about them....I don't need to soak in complete solitude but I don't want to experience too much chaos, either. Am I on the right track? Any suggestions? I don't mind hiking but I drive a VW Golf so the roads need to be reasonably good.

Greetings,

For those who have heard of the Marine County Tidal Hot Springs, but have never been: Yes they are real. I just went this morning and they're in fantastic shape! Unfortunately they will become rarer soon, so if you may want to visit them soon (like the next few days).

The springs are most easily reached by 'goat' trail near Steep Ravine Environmental Campground, located about 1/4 mi. south of Red Rock Beach, which is about 2.5 mi. south of Stinson Beach. Most of the time (i.e. >99%) the springs are covered by the Pacific Ocean, and they only happen during extreme low tides (i.e. when the tides are less than '0' foot mean-tide). These extreme low tides occur only during certain days (normally around New Moon and Full Moon). Summer and Winter have more extreme tides than Fall and Spring, and the Winter Storms often swamp the springs with high waves, no matter how low the tides get. Therefore Summer is the best Soaking Season.

Sadly, the 2007 Summer Soaking Season is almost over, and opportunities are getting rarer.

The good news is that we're in the middle of one of the last extreme-tide 'cycles' of the season. So the next Hot Springs will occur very early tomorrow (Sunday) morning, starting at ~4:15 AM (when the tide falls to '0' feet). The tide will then continue to fall to 0.9 ft. at 5:56 AM, and the springs will keep getting hotter. It will remain hot until the rising tide brings the waves, which will probably occur shortly before 9:00 AM (when the tide rises to almost 1 ft. above '0' mean tide).

The next day (Monday) everything will occur about 50 minutes later. The next day the it wil happen again, but not as much. By the end of the week the 'cycle' will be over. There are a few low tides in August, though they won't be as deep as tomorrow or Monday.

If this interests you feel free t reply and I'll send directions. Realistically, it's probably not a good idea for you to try to hike down the (very steep) trail to the springs in the pre-dawn dark unless you're hiking with someone experienced. Once you've been shown the way, there's no problem. Nevertheless, it's best to follow someone else the first time. Also: Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and/or socks (there's poison oak on the path -- no need to spoil you experience by getting stung :-)

We'll be going tomorrow (Sunday) morning, so if any of you want to ride with us or caravan in your own vehicle, just email and we can make arrangements.

Hope you find this info useful.

Happy Soaking!
I'm new to this tribe. Happy to find fellow soakers. Last year after the burn my hubby and I went to Valley View Hot Springs in So. Colorado. It was awesome! A sacred place. There were both developed and undeveloped springs and pools, and a wonderful sauna. Everything was clothing optional. There are rooms to rent, and camping.
While we were there last year we heard about 2 other hot springs in the same general area: Buena Vista, and Princeston. I was wondering if anyone in this tribe could give me some info I couldn't find on their websites. Are either of them clothing optional? Is there camping for a 40 foot bus? I'd appreciate any info you may have about these two hot springs.
Thanks!

I'm planning a trip to Sykes Hot Springs during the last week/weekend in July, 2007.

I have a few questions for the tribe...

Are the trails crowded during this time of year? If so, can you recommend a day and time to go when it is less crowded?

Any suggestions on where to camp?

Is a 2 or 3 day hike recommended?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Still natural, no concrete, just dugouts.... A few in a row down the river's edge. On the hike you pass a small rickety fenced off area that looked like an very old grave-yard.... Good energy, intense, breathtaking in beauty.

We are short some drummers this year for FireDrums V. The point is to get enough drummers that we can sustain a 24/7 drumming session throughout the entire event...oh yeah...nothing beats falling asleep and waking to the beat of da skins!

Please contact me off list if you are interested in lending your HANDS to join this Fire and Drum event and I can put you in contact with the coordinators....thanks!!!:

FireDrums V
Thursday, May 3rd - Sunday, May 6th, 2007

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 4 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire Spinning and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for FireDrums V. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 2nd gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. The Camp Ranger commented on how wonderful and respectful everyone was at our last gathering and he was very glad to see that we are not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!
This is the perfect time of year to go hot soaking in Arizona. If you haven't tried El Dorado I recommend it heartily! The current superintendents of the place are a little strange in a stereotypical "Western-character-who-don't-get-much-out-of-these-parts" way, but they're nice people fer sure.

$10 an hour for a private tub; $7.50/hr for the all-nude, communal tub, if you want to meet new friends.

We went with a group of eight folks so we rented one of the bigger private tubs. Great time! Very relaxing.

My friend and I were planning on heading up to Big Bend this Friday for an overnight stay. Unfortunately we just found out they're closed for renovations :(

I'm hoping to find suggestions for something similar- namely a reasonable... ok, minimal price!... with camping facilities. Big Bend I believe was $5 for the soak and $15 for camping. I'm in Chico and although I love Woody's, we're looking for something new that's no more than perhaps 3-4 hours away.

Any suggestions??? Thank you so much in advance!! I'm so excited to find this tribe and making use of more of the good information later :)

Greetings fellow enthusiasts of hot springs!

I've started a tribe for Alaskan Naturists. I've been involved with organized naturism / nudism since the mid-1990s. I was a member of a great club in central California called the Natural Manner Club, which I was able to participate in when I visited California. The Natural Manner Club held one or two events a month, almost always at the home of a member. Folks who had swimming pools (with high fences in their back yards) hosted swimming parties, people with large-screen televisions hosted super bowl / world cup events, and various holidays became general clothing-mostly-optional theme parties (St. Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, Halloween, Christmas, etc.). Some people organized day hikes in secluded areas of federal land (there are no federal laws against nudity, as long as it's not "lewd"). One club member was a guide at a cave and once a year he led a clothing-optional (shoes recommended) hike of the caverns.

Living in Anchorage, I'd enjoy finding others who would like to socialize in a clothing-free atmosphere, at least now and then. Looking forward to meeting more like-minded friends. Come join me if you'd like to learn more.

hello folks. i don't post here (or on tribe for that matter) very often, so greetings to those of you who i have yet to meet.

i have been going to the hotsprings in big bend, on kosk creek, for 12 years. for those of you familiar with the area, i am referencing the ones that are outside the middle of town, and are "wild"...not the pay per use where there is a campground.

these springs are on land that is incredibly sacred to me (and to the local native american tribes) and i have stepped into a role of spiritual guardian for the area. i was deeply disturbed recently at some drastic changes that were made to one of the pools that is furthest up the river, often referred to as "kosk springs". what was once a comfortable, nurturing pool that came up to my neck, is now an awkward, shallow puddle that comes up to my hips. someone, obviously with good intention, filled in the bottom of the pool with rocks and cement. in my experience, and in the experience of friends (some local) who know that land well, these changes have felt like a desecration and have radically altered the energetic expression of the area.

i am wondering if any of you folks know who did this, and if you would be willing to engage in a conversation about it. it was not done by one of the local folks who watches over the place. i would like to be tactful around this, since it seems to have been done with care. however, i am also very aware that these changes do not feel ok, and i would like to put into motion some action to return them to the way they were.

thanks!

We were out at these springs this past weekend.
They are in pretty good shape. We cleaned one of the three pools with the shop vac and scrubby brushes.
It's a shame they don't have drains in them, for all the silt (ALOT OF SILT) since the pools are sunken, it would be pretty impossible to do.
Otherwise, you will not want for hot water, the pools are unfortunately sometimes TOO hot. There is hot AND cold running spring into the pools, but is set up in a way that if you don't know what is going on, (the locals said that "everybody thinks they are a plumber) you don't get the pools evenly distributed. You end up with two very hot pools and one ok pool.
Very remote, few visitors (the weekends bring local drinking kids, but they were nice enough, we did teach them about "leave no trace") plenty of clothing optional, including a few locals, who were very kind and helpful.
CAREFUL the surrounding area that is NOT road, the ground may look hard, but just under the crust is feet and feet of burning hot mud.. IF you are able to get out, you would surely have severe burns.
We took out 4 bags of garbage, and there is some you just can't get to (it's in the burning muck) without some long rakes or rakes on rope.
