Scenic Hot Springs, WA

There used to be a wonderful HS off a logging road on Highway 2 near the town of Scenic, WA. I heard some years back that it was torn down after police found repeated drug use on site. Does anyone know its current status, or could tell me if that was just a rumor to discourage casual visitors?

I think it was in 2005 that it was destroyed by a local sherif. What was done was the sherif went in with a chain saw and destroyed all the wooden tubs. But there is one concrete pool that is not destroyed and is very nice for a soak. Subsequently to this, the property was purchased by (I forget his name), and he is attempting to re-open the springs but it is closed right now. Apparently what he is trying to do is have a nice set up like before with a caretaker and then a small charge to help pay for the caretaker (like goldmayer). He is having some problems getting the county to approve the permits for the springs. It is barely in King County and the county is trying to make him chlorinate the water, which he does not want to do.

Right now its closed to public use, but there are clean up parties a couple times a year. If you participate in a clean up party you can meet the owner and get approval to go to the spring whenever you want (as long as you clean when you are there). To find out about clean up parties Scenic has its own tribe called "Friends of Scenic Hot Springs" and the clean up parties are announced on there. Another option is to tresspass onto the property and hope you are not caught. The only person that would catch you is the owner or a "friend of the hot spring", and they would probably just be really angry and kick you out. Last time I went was this last winter, I snow shoed up and had a great soak, and was not "caught" tresspassing. Good luck and have fun!

Or you could go up there get caught and be arrested for trespassing and fined or sent to jail. The reason it was shut down was because it had many people abusing the springs and if you start abusing it again then it will never open because the authorities will not give the new owner permission. Mike Sato has worked very hard for the last 2+ years trying to get Scenic open again and to have a few trespassors come up and mess things up so he or someone else has to start the whole process all over again would be a tragedy. Look for the clean up day, it is normally in June and sign up, help out and get a pass from the owner. Let's work at doing this right so it stays open.

Thanks for the advice, Bill. I loved Scenic as it once was, and would love to see it become like that again. If you notice a clean-up day posted somewhere, could you try to get the word out? I will certainly keep my eye out personally, but I'd like to think that there are those reading who might also be interested enough in preserving the beautiful natural hot springs of the area that they might want to join in as well.

I hope to meet some of you up there, some day.

It will probably never be like it was with the blue tarps and shoddy construction but it will be better and safer I am sure of it. Mike Sato has done this before, taking an abused hot spring and making it into somewhere you look forward to going as often as you can.
