Sykes is over run by the Big Basin fire. . .

Went down for a birthday back pack and should have checked the fire report. All hiking was forbidden in Los Padares National Forest. They evacuated soakers at 3 am Saturday Morning 6/21. The fire has burned close to Sykes and the firefighters are defending Hwy 1 businesses--Letting the wildlands burn. Any of you who are familiar with the Ventana area know why it would be senseless to put firefighters back in that steep terrain--so Sykes will not look the same next time we visit. As of writing the Big Basin fire was 3 percent contained. . . a new day. . .

  • big basin is in the santa cruz mtns....you mean basin i think.

one of the 2 big sur fires is called basin...

this website has good current info:

    www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/conditions/

that sucks you didn't get to go! happy belated birthday!

i was in mendocino and heading to orr hot springs on monday wnen i heard it had been evacuated.
the air was really heinous up there...
    • Orr was evacuated too? I should look at tht mapagain;it looked as though Humboldt and endocino Coasts were among the LESS affected areas, and Orr is fairly close tothe coast though a little more Ukiah than Coast..(I don;t go there anymore because the scene for people with children and teens has become so difficult, but it was great in its first decade, the bestof th hippie-revived hot spring resorts it was featured in slightly disguised mode in a Dorothy Bryant oo much water in the Midwest, too much fire toward the Left Coast.
looking at the map I'm wondering if thre is ANYWHERE to go in the next week or two outside and air the Bay Area (without hopping on airplane, whch has its own problems environmentally and practically right now) I was invited to a Fourth of July celebration on a frend's place not far from Stewart HS, in SIskyou County near Happy Camp, but going up I5 seems absurd and dangerous. my friend's parents live in Paradise/CHicoarea and were evacuated a week or two ago) (was also hoping to show my daughter Shasta and/or Lassen) parks we love Sierra Hot Springs but I-80 Auburn to Truckee is also a messI haven;t heard any specific reports about Harbin HS but I suspect that's out too; Lake County has been nasty.

Big Sur and Ventana..same deal, Esalen has cancelled all seminars and guest stays for the next few weeks and evacuated much, and so has Tassajara Zen Center can;teven go to Santa Cruz for the day,I don;t think..

maybe it's time for a fet of rain dances for the whole of the northern part of the state get together with friends, really, really pray for cleansing rains. even if you are out of the path of the fires, the air desperately needs clearing

  • hey Zeke funny I'd find your post when I did a search for how sykes was fairing with the fires! Major bummer about Big Sur. By the way I hope you know in case you ever go backpacking out there again - the summer months during a dry year are nearly unbearable for backpackers because there is little to NO water to refill at except the river mid-way. So pack lots of water! (you are strong enough so load up!) A backpacker just died out there a couple weeks ago when my friend was camping, from dehydration. He almost made it back to Pfeiffer campground and to safety. Poor guy.

When I first went backpacking in Ventana some 12 years ago it had just suffered a major fire and I couldn't go to Sykes. (the rest of the wilderness is quite lovely, too!) I watched over the years the burn areas grow back. The place will recover. Its the nature of wildernesses :)

I am glad to hear that Esalen is doing ok and Nepenthe still stands, according to their weather cam: www.nepenthebigsur.com/images...am.html

Yes Rain Dance! I just did my own prayers for rain over Big Sur in my morning meditation. Maybe if we all do the same...
